Looking for tips building a semi-vintage stereo

I am pretty new to stereos. Electronics and I go way back, but acoustics and the like are new to me. I want to set up a good mid-range system for not too much cash, but something I can feel proud of. Right now, I have a BIC 960 turntable sitting on top of a TEAC AG-55 reciever. I have a good sounding set of JVC floor speakers, but they don't put off good full range sound, so I have some old Sanyo smaller floor speakers sitting on top of them to pick up the treble. I know this is an unacceptable system, but except for the Apple AirPort Express currently pumping music strait from my iBook, it was all FREE!
Now I am looking to spend maybe $300-500 over the next few months to really beef up my system. i really like my turntable, so I'm looking at replacing my TEAC and the speakers. I love vintage gear, at least older then 1980, but I am confused about some things:
Should I get a receiver, amp, or pre-amp? Whatever I go for, I was planning on getting a transistor driven Marantz unit, but I'm not sure which I need. I never use AM-FM, if that makes a difference. My inputs include the turntable, the AirTunes, and the TV/VCR/DVD (Although movies tack a back seat to music, my TV isn't even visible from the couch and is for occasional use only)
Is the most ideal set up for classic stereo just to have one set of really good speakers placed ideally in front? I like my JVCs, but they sound really bass-heavy when used alone.
I've got a serious hissing sound in my sound, I'm hoping that will go away with a new amp, but could it be anything else?
To me my music sounds great, but I know it could sound better, plus the vintage look of good stereo seriously turns me on!
