Check your local humane society or dog pound, and see what they have there first. There are always sweet dogs that would just love to be rescued.
The most important thing is to make sure that your dog matches your lifestyle. Dalmations are hyper because they are bread to run long distances. 100 miles a day is no problem for them. If you work a lot, and don't have a lot time to devote to your dog's excercise needs, then both of you suffer. If that energy isn't channeled into the proper activities, then the dog will find something to occupy them that you might not agree with.
Dalmations are cool dogs, but just make sure you know what you are getting into. IMHO muts are the best bet. They tend to have good temperament and a lot of the negative qualities are diluted in the mix.
There are a ton of books and websites out there to help with your decision. I highly recommend 'Culture Clash'.
Good luck,
Tim
