Having just switched to AWD, it makes me laugh when the FWD'ers continually make the claim that FWD is just as good. Sure you can get through snowy winters with front wheel drive, and even better with snow tires on front wheel drive. But the feel of AWD in the snow is unmatched. I bought a Subaru Legacy GT wagon in December, and it makes such a difference. I pulled out of a parking spot after 27" of snowfall and then the plow pushing an even bigger pile up against the car. I only needed to clear enough snow to be able to open the door. My car pulled out as if there was a couple of inches of snow. It was absolutely effortless. I do not think that I will ever own a car without AWD now.
