The whole-house filter we got was a GE and uses a standard filter cartridge that runs around $10 for 2 of them.
The filter itself runs around $30 and has compression fittings for 3/4" copper lines. It's not a bad install. I've some recent ones that come with aluminum brackets that take the weight of the filter off the pipes. I hate to think of how Mickey Mouse(R) my instllation is, but it works OK and hasn't broken or leaked too much yet, knock on medium-density fiberboard.
Oh, yeah, this'll be a lot cheaper than all of those fridge filters. I was going to install one of those but, at my wife's insistence, I go to the grocery and get bagged ice (which I put in the freezer bin so it feeds automatically through the door.) That actually tastes a lot better than the homemade ice :-)
