Our water is well water, excellent except for the iron content which is quite common here in the Hudson River Valley area of NY. The other most prominent problem is sulphur water which Im thankfull we don't have, it's pretty nasty smelling but otherwise harmless I think. I put a whole house filter on as others have said. It's about 16" long by about 5" around. Fairly easy to install if your handy. I plumbed mine in a " D " loop with valves at both ends so I can totally shut it off from the rest of the system even though the filter itself has a bypass feature. I wanted it this way as an xtra measure in case something went wrong with the unit, I would still have straight well water. I use the least expensive basic sediment filters, theyre about 6 bucks for a two pack. I change them about once a month, or when a significant drop in pressure starts showing. Your frequency might be more or less depending on usage and amount of sediments. Bit of a pain to change them,as I find I really have to crank down on the screw in chamber to get a good seal but overall pretty cheap fix for the problem. BTW, ive tried both the string and the paper type filters, seems the paper lets more thru and doesnt clog as fast, but then again the string does the opposite, both cost about the same.
