WOT: Water filter type for well water?

Hi folks...
We own a condo in CT and our water supply is fed from multiple wells here. They're pumped into a treatment center type of thing and then it's distributed to the units from there.
Over the last few weeks they've had some problems with the pumps dying and resivoirs going dry so when they start back up, the water is dark yellow to brown in color and we have to clean out the screens on all of our faucets and shower heads because of junk collected in them...it's really nasty, not to mention the brown streaks all over the toilets and sinks. Our showerheads always have black gunk built up on them also, and the tile grout gets really dirty in two days from cleaning.
We want to stick some sort of whole house filter on the main water line to help this. Don't want to go for a big buck reverse osmosis thing, but something more or less just "in-line". Would a basic sediment filter clear this up? Or would we have to go with some sort of dual stage system or bigger?
Also, they send out a yearly report on water conditions and it always reads a very high sodium content, but within legal limits (barely). Would the sediment filter help that also?
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
