In our last house, we had a system that aspirated air, which oxidized Fe & S so it could be filtered with a green-sand filter. That filter had some similar back-flushing hardware, like a softener, so you didn't have to replace the filtering sand all the time. I think it was called a Provector or something like that.
I'm sure it all depends on what's in the water, at what levels. There's all kinds of systems, it's not accurate to just think 'water softener'... Local water-conditioning guys must have a good idea where to start.
