OT: Residential A/C system question

The recent spate of high humidity finally forced me to turn on the central a/c system in my home. The Compressor in the outdoor section of the system would not start so I replaced the capacitor that kicks the compressor motor into action. A/C has been working fine since, however, now I'm getting a faint chemical smell like moth balls from the air ducts.
Assuming I may have a freon leak in the indoor portion of the system, would such a leak give off a smell? System seems to cool and dry out the air pretty well, so how bad a leak could it be? Obviously I'm concerned about breathing freon so I'm hesitant to use the system. With the weather, its hard to get a service call for a few days. Any advice?
System is a Trane Executive gas heat, central a/c model, about 15 years old. Thanks in advance.
