I had a 25yr old system that went bad so I replaced it along with the furnace. Boy was I cold last winter.
I went from an 8 SEER to a 14 SEER and ensured that I got the correct refridgerant. They still sell the old style but I think it would be a bother for the old style when it is completely phased out.
The new AC compressor was the same tonnage as the old one but physically MUCH LARGER. The techs said it had to do with the higher efficiency. I expected what you suggested which was something smaller. Regardless, it is darn quite and works very well.
If you replace it, remember to get the same tonnage if the current size works for you. The sales folks should probably do an analasys for you as well, just to be sure. If it's too big it will be wasteful and turn on and off all the time and it won't dehumidify. If it's too small, it will run too often and not keep up when you REALLY need it.
