Down here A/C is not a luxury, it's a necessity! If any of my clients asked me for my $ .02, given the age of the unit you have, I'd tell them to replace the compressor without a doubt. The units being sold today are sooooo much more efficient than those engineered 20 years ago and built 16 years ago. You could probably get a 12 - 14 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) that would be twice as efficient as the unit you have now. Also, beginning in Jan. '06, the refrigerant in your current compressor will be mandated obsolete by the EPA. The new standard refrigerant will be "410-a" and it is not compatible with most older equipment... and certainly not with 15 year old equipment. Furthermore, because a new compresser will be so much more efficient, you might be able to "down size" for further savings.
I'll second the counsel Erik passed on: find a good *honest* HVAC man and go with his reccomendation. You might be able to get another season or two out of the unit you currently have, but it's on its last legs.
Good Luck!
