Apparently it's a Sterling engine which has it's working fluid captured in a piston-cylinder. Supply heat to one 'side' of the engine & the other 'side' needs a heat sink to take away heat.
I heard about those years ago as a way to provide modest amounts of electricity to 3rd-world areas. I suppose they're not as fragile as photovoltaics?
