You're right about the steam engine...an amazing item.
I'm a bit of an "Anything-mechanical" fan. There was a neat blurb on PBS last night about a group of guys restoring a narrow gauge railroad (A 24-inch gauge, in fact) somewhere in VT or NH. I was mesmerized.
There's a local band here in Bozeman, MT called "Steam-powered airplane" They've got a great logo.
There are so many elegant ways of exploiting the thermodynamics of gasses/fluids. I still think that AC is one of the best tricks ever invented.
