i don't know how they do it. 30+mpg in a fairly heavy car, with an automatic, AC, plenty of power, all from a large PUSHROD V6. A girl I knew in college had an early '90s Buick with the 3800 and 285k on the odo (could have been rebuilt, but I don't think so). The LT1 V8 would get high 20 mpgs in 6-speed Camaros, partly in thanks to a very tall 6th gear, but still pretty amazing. GM can definitely compete when they want, but both the 3800 and the LT1 were panned as "low tech." Aparently the critics demand a lack of low-end torque to go with their economey and longevity.
