I've liked the GM V6 engines in various rentals, especially whatever was in some Olds Intrigues I put a couple thousand miles on--Chicago to NH on one trip and NH to NYC to Ottawa to NH on another. Quiet, decent power, good economy, even at 80+ speeds.
I know overhead cam engines are more sophisticated than pushrod motors and are technically more interesting, and have certain advantages, but a good pushrod motor that's been refined over the years has a lot going for it. Look, for instance, at a 5.0 Mustang V8. 225 hp stock, and it's easy to get 300 hp out of it, and it still gets 25+ mpg on the highway. And it's relatively cheap to buy one as a crate motor for about $3K with GT40 heads that'll give you at least 300 hp.
I still love a small turbo on a 4 cyl motor best, but it's not the only way to go.
