When I worked for VW 25 years ago, they did all they could to push "German engineering" even though the then current Rabbit was a POS made in Pennsylvania with Mexican engines and assorted US-made parts. OK the rest of the product line was German, but still... And dealers hated the whole German engineering BS. AND the cars were only moderately reliable.
Audi (owned by VW), Porsche, MB and BMW now all do the same schtick, having managed to convince the world that German engineering is superior to anything else--and worth the premium. And that more maintenance than a Japanese car requires is needed and justified for the soul of the German car. Right. And if you believe that...
A good friend has two E-class Mercs and refers to my 9K as "the sports car" which he says will put away his two cars on any road. He bemoans having to put premium gas in his Mercs but refuses to recognize the Saab engineering that lets me run any grade of gas. He puts 140 pounds of sand in his trunk so he can get around in the winter. He has bought into the Mercedes mystique--these are his third and fourth Mercs. I tell him maybe someday he can move up to a Saab. :-)
I DO like many of the German cars, but they are simply not worth the money to me, and have become too much of a status symbol.
But there's nothing like consistent marketing to build an image!
