Suggestions for walk behind mower (A little long) Posted by Wil W [Email] (#1148) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Wil W) on Tue, 30 Aug 2005 07:04:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi,
Will be moving into a house soon that has a medium size yard. I need to buy a lawn mower and wanted to get some sage advice. I looked a a couple on ebay for around $100 but very limited as they aren't worth shipping. I live in MN so I only need to mow for about 8 months.
I went into a couple of local hardware/lawn garden places and since it is pretty late in the season their used selection are pretty bare just some really old and but up units for around $100-$300. They had a large selection of new stuff, Toro, Lawnboy, Honda. A few recommended the Toro Recycler w/ or w/out the Personal Pace ($290 & $380). The local mom/pop large equipment shop suggested higher end Toro, Lawnboy and Honda. He thought the lower end Toro's were not very good and were "Home Depot Specials" and said he has been seeing quite a few in for repairs at his shop.
He suggested several units around $380-$600 he thought were really good. I tried the "personal pace" unit and thought it felt kinda weird. We checked their repair/used shop and found a Honda HRX unit that they just got in on trade. The previous owner purchased 2-3 yrs ago and wanted to upgrade to the new Honda HRX w/ the extra bells/whistles. The unit looked good and started right up, but since they just got it in, they hadn't checked it over and tuned it up yet, they will do so before the send it out. He said the unit was basically the HRX217HXA, but it didn't have the new body, the mulch/bag latch, larger wheels and the new cutting system. New it sold for $699 and the current version is also at $699.
The mower looks pretty good, and will come w/ the rear bag, an extra set of blades, and the current blades were recently sharpened. But since its used it'll come w/ a 30 day warranty and since the shop has been in business for 30+ yrs they would stand behind their sales in case something major happens to the mower. He wants $399 for it and has held it for me for the day. He thought if he put it out on the floor it would be gone in hours. I lean towards getting it as he said Honda's have the best engines and this one has a 2000 hr rating vs the Toro and the lower end Honda that have around 800 hrs. I would have liked to stay in the $100-200 range, but from what I saw they might last me 1 season and once I'm up in the $300 range this might be a good deal at $400 for a 2-3 yr old $700 machine. Besides they almost never go on any major sale. Maybe save $10-50 bucks.
Any thoughts or advice? Sorry for the the length and thanks in advance.
