Slaab (post below) makes some excellent points. There are a lot of good mowers out there and I don't think price has a whole lot to do with quality. There are some useful features on some mowers and some that are just there to take money from your wallet.
I have a hilly 3/4 acre to mow, so I use a tractor, but do the several narrow areas and edges with a walk-behind. Mine is a 20" Murray with a Briggs & Stratton engine. Not self-propelled. It mulches or bags, side discharge is VERY useful choice. I got it for $60 at Home Depot, where it had been returned after a few weeks of use. I put in a new plug, changed the oil and it has started on the second pull every time for 3 years. I put a freshly sharpened blade on it each spring, and keep a spare one in the garage. It cuts well and does a fine job.
If I didn't have a tractor, I think I'd get a self-propelled Ariens with the swivel front wheels and large diameter real wheels. Very useful on uneven terrain and tight spaces.
However.... half the mowers I see in the junk pile at our local dump are self-drive units (the trannies go south). All are the second tier brands (Toro, Yardman, MTD, Murray, Craftsman). Never a Honda or Ariens.
