The scope of destruction in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi is beyond belief. Because it is a modern, highly developed area, the damage is far more complex than many of the areas affected by the tsunami in southeast Asia last December.
I have business friends in New Orleans whose homes and company are in the city. And they have no place to go back to. And since their firm's customers (such as casinos) are almost all from the Gulf Coastal area affected by the storm, there's a lot more than buildings and equipment to be replaced. It's just terrible.
While my heart goes out to my friends and all those who have lost so much in this storm and its aftermath, what strikes me is that Nature always wins in the end. New Orleans, built below sea-level and surrounded on three sides by water, has been on borrowed time since it first began. I learned in geology class that that kind of land belongs to the Mississippi River and the ocean, and the time finally came to take it back. Same goes for homes and businesses built on the beach in Alabama and Mississippi. And anywhere else, for that matter.
When will people learn that all the controls we try to put on Nature are an illusion, futile attempts to control something we don’t really understand?
What is perhaps even more astonishing is that once the water is drained, the levees rebuilt, and the debris cleared, state and federal governments, in their infinite arrogance, will try to rebuild some "new" version of The Big Easy. And it will lie waiting for another, bigger storm 10, 25, 50 or 100 years from now that will do the same thing all over again.
Sorry to rant. This is me being cynical, environmental, and anti-development all at once.
