This was a month ago when gas was around $2.60 or something here. He said, most of the commerical drivers don't really care about fuel prices; they just swipe and never even look at the price since the companies pick up the bill. Then he went on to say something you never see the people interviewed by the news say. He said he hopes the price keeps going up and in big jumps; people need a shock to wake up and realize they are the problem and need to change. A view you will seldom hear expressed.
There was a sense of this back around 1980/81. Detroit was well into downsizing. By us on Lake Michigan big power boats sat in the boat yard (unused and basically unsellable) and some owners dumped them for motorsailors and sailboats. People really did begin to make changes; but then prices stablized and even dropped significantly. Then we slowly worked our way to a point we are now; even worse off especially from a vehicle perspective and gas mileage. To my surprise I heard a couple weeks ago gas (gas ~ 2.62/2.67 here at time) in constant dollars was still lower in price than 1981. I wonder if we have finally broken that 1981 adjusted price. If so is that the point we begin to see change again?
