I'm originally from Ukraine. My parents are still there.
Gas prices averaging about $3-4 a gallon. My folks are very lucky working for small private company and get about $60-80 a month each (salary based on productivity). I can probably safely say it's an average monthly salary right now, maybe little higher. So, to fill up his 18 year old car my dad has to work 2 weeks. Sollution- they use bicycles to go to work, public transportation for longer trips, carpooling is a part of everydaylife. Car is being used only if really needed.
What amazes me is that number of cars on the roads are constantly growing, most of them are late models from all over the world, but that's a different story.
PS: I used to walk to work every day when I lived there (0.7mile). I wish I could do it here and keep my Saab forever!
