But once you get out in the country or more rural areas it's not as convenient as in the cities. But it's still better in many ways than the US with respect to transport.
The European countries and their developed areas are laid out much more compactly. And public transportation actaully works. There just isn't the suburban sprawl we have in the US. And since they have great public transport it's easier to get by without a car, or with minimal use of one. Last winter in Munich, for example, I saw people coming back from a day or two of skiing getting off the trains that took them to and from the areas a couple hours away.
Unfortunately most of the US can't really be weaned off of the automobile. But the cars used can sure be more efficient. I think that's the key for the US. Reduce consumption. Very few people really need a big SUV that tows a 24 foot boat that uses nearly as much gas.
If gas prices remain high we are going to see some major lifestyle changes in this country. And people are going to be pissed!
