The relationship with the environment is important even for ensuring steady realiable oil/gas production. Just look at Louisiana and what human activity has done around the Delta and the Missisippi River. This is part of the reason the recent event may have been so exteme. This is an area were a lot of refining is done. A disregard for the enviornment doesn't promote that but impedes it in this area. The Delta and the Mississippi river have been so radically altered over the years that the ecosystem of the area is collapsing. In the Delta large areas of the critical marshes are in such bad shap they are dying and land built up by the Mississippi is liternally being reclaimed by the Gulf. This has compounded maintenance problems for the oil industry b/c pipeline never designed to be under water need attention. Events like hurricanes have the potential to be much more destructive.
