I was loaned my dad's manual transmission Mazda B2000 pick-up as a new driver in high school and through university. I paid my share of the insurance and maintenance, over and above what was required.
Once I graduated from university, I purchased a new '92 Toyota Corolla with manual transmission (part my money, part gift from parents). I appreciated having my own car, even if it was a "driving-appliance". It was mine and I paid for all maintenance and insurance. I also kept it in showroom condition. Only in 1997 did I buy my first Saab, and the lessons I learned about getting the most out of my stock Corolla made driving the Saab that much more enjoyable.
If you are buying the car for your teen, look at long term reliability, as well as the expense of insurance, replacement parts, etc. Manual transmissions are great for teaching driving skills as well as getting the most out of small fuel-efficient engines. You don't NEED 200hp to merge into traffic.
Hopefully your teen will not look this gift horse in the mouth.
