As yet another young kid, I bought a 1990 Saab 9000S 2.3L non-turbo myself. It isnt fast, but I am satisfied with getting through high school and college with it, I will save my money and buy a 900 spg or airflow or 9000 aero once Im done with school. It would be really great to have a turbo, but looking at it from the big picture i realize it is ok - I bought a slower car, but saved some money. Another aspect to look at is having your son pay some money to buy the car off of you. It will give a better sense of accomplishment, and he will want to maintain the car religiously. My friends make fun of me for taking such good care of my nonturbo 15 yr old car.
I feel I am a safe driver compared to most others (excluding senior citizens) but still find myself gunning it sometimes to get a rush. My dad test drove a saab turbo (real car is a caddy V8) and he found himself going way past the limit without realizing it. All in all, I think either will do just fine, they are both nice respectable cars that he wont be ashamed to drive
