Nick,
My two cents:
Points card- the points are only good for razors, dehumidifiers, bbq sets, and basketballs; you know sharper image type stuff, even then it costs same as retail so why bother? And with places like ebay retail is just one option out of many.
Miles card- From what I know it takes some 25,000 to earn a free R/T ticket, with the first $5,000 worth of points given as a signup bonus. Call me a cheap bastard but if I want tickets for less I buy some transferrable airline vouchers (Jetblue, Delta) and fly anywhere for $250 tops. In addition sites like travelocity and expedia will quote reduced fares whereas your creditcard company will want you to ring up a dollar amount equivalent to retail.
Cash card - I would go with a cash card. Two weeks ago I went online and requested a rebate check sent to me, I used that money to purchase a set of shelf speakers for the Aero and the rest is going to an Infinity Basslink system. Now that's a reward! :)
I am (try to be) very textbook with my credit and do not open/close a lot of cards. However, I just called citibank and applied for a 0% for twelve months, they said sure to the tune of $8,000. Also, I can transfer available credit from another Citi card account I have with them to make it a 10,000 0% for 12 months card. I would be losing 2,000 of available credit on my current card. Then, that 10K will be going to Capitol One Auto to pay off the balance and the lien on my title will be released.
This in turn makes me look good on paper with Capitol One, who in turn will want me for my next car purchase (this loan was a 5.43% for 36 months), and it makes me look good with my mainstay bank Citibank; Win, win.
I think you can do better than the 18-19% mentioned earlier. Citi's current pro forma offer was 0% for 12 months with 15% thereafter. I wanted them to give me 0% for life of the transferred balance; no dice.
The Citibank Platinum Dividend card is a good choice, it is a cash back card, and should offer a low % to boot.
Best,
Tom
