You're right, and I don't really think BMW is buying the editorial. But since car mags aren't really news-driven (just the facts, ma'am) some bias sneaks in. I know it does in the tech pubs I've been involved with. But there are ways of being neutral and ways of showing bias. And if one car maker consistenly treats writers better than others, gives them the right trips and trinkets, some bias does creep in, even it is just overlooking or playing down shortcomings of a particular model.
Still, I think C&D has long had a bias towards German cars, not just BMW. Some of this is simply that they are BMW fans. After all, the writers are hard-core car guys and BMWs really *do* drive well. And if you drive a lot of different cars you are more sensitive to how each performs.
What I don't like is how their comparos often don't make fair comparisons, and don't test real-world driving in the way most of us car guys actually drive. It doesn't really matter if Car A is a couple of tenths of a second faster than Car B. And I don't think most of us do much street racing anyway, so who cares? And the tests can't measure how a car performs over time.
What I would like to know is what the car mag writers choose as their own cars.
