Combo is nifty idea, but real life was different. I once tried a DVD/CDR/CDRW/MP3/CD player. It was fun but I ended up returning it because years ago, MP3 was new and this machine didn't understand VBR (variable bit rate) so it got confused. I like the idea of all in one, but in real life, we only play DVD's in our DVD player and we plug our iPod mini's into either a nice Creative or Cambridge soundworks system which we have in the office, kitchen, and of course, garage. We use an Apple Airport Express to do it wirelessly too. Our iPod mini's have become the central part of our music use, so they go in the car too. We went camping last week and brought the Creative sound system so we didn't have to use the crappy stereo in the 85 VW Westfalia we borrowed from our friends. I powered it using a Coleman 1200 watt inverter (would've used a smaller one, but the espresso machine we brought with us needed the bigger one - oh, nobody told you espresso machines are necessary camping supplies?) hooked up to a Marine Deep Cycle battery juiced up from the two extra solar panels I have installed.
I agree with GM and AdamB, the speakers and woofer make the big, important difference.
