He knows what he's talking about. I've done some of that myself. I've also been building speakers for almost 30 years. Yikes... I'm not yet 40 though.
Another good sub are the new B&W powered subs. For the same price range they were more accurate than the Velodynes but the more expensive Velodynes are nice sounding and looking.
For entry-level stuff, make sure the speakers work in your room and build the electronics around it. For high end speakers, high end electronics are a must as the higher resolution reveals the limitations in the electronics.
I find the most difficult part is getting speakers that pass the WAF, sound good where you want them placed, and are affordable which is why I suggest filling in that requirement first. Remember; If it sounds better to you, it IS better.
