When my old CD player crapped out and I received a decent DVD player for my wedding 5 years ago I didn't think much of it. It played the CD's fine through my decent stereo at the time (Snell speakers, NAD amp). Then it stopped playing CDs one day. It now plays DVD's flawlessly at my mother-in-law's.
I replaced it with a low-end Toshiba DVD player. After almost a year it crapped out and stopped playing CDs (DVDs were fine). Replaced under warranty. The new one, after a year or so, now can barely play CDs. It skips very easily and has terrible error correction. There is frequent bass distortion. Still plays DVDs perfectly.
As far as I can tell, since you need two laser systems for the two discs, they manufacturers put the least possible dollars into the CD subsystem and the quality is terrible unless you pay big bucks. So, I would suggest a dedicated player for each if you want your $ to last and the CDs to sound decent. I don't listen to many CDs at home these days since we mostly run the boombox in my son's room for his songs and because the Toshiba sucks rocks.
A planned future purchase will replace both the DVD player and add a CD player. After I move, maybe. And after I get another Saab ;-)
