Had an '84 Scirocco, stock with the GTI engine, trans, and suspension/brakes. Drove it for 140K trouble-free miles. Loved the trans. Best seats until the Viggen.
Its predecessor was a '77 Rabbit (German, K-Jetronic, non-AC) modifed to Euro GTI wheels with 205/60-13s, Koni suspension, stress and sway bars, GTI brakes, E-Code lights, a bank of Hella 160s, oil cooler, cam and exhaust, and badged as a Golf GTI. That car had zip. Another 160K trouble free car. Darn, that was over 20 years ago...
Too bad VW is not as reliable or sporty anymore, unless you throw $30K for the sporty...., still not as reliable though.
