Their lightweight and good handling, along with a smooth engine made the GTIs and Sciroccos seem eager---ready to rush for the redline. Sure they lacked the poke of a turbo Saab, but for most things they were just fine. My '78 Scirocco would do about 110-115. The '86 GTI was good for 120-125 (never went there). My 9K is good for 140+, but you can't really do that these days, at least in the East.
I've driven both my GTI and my 9K on many of the same roads and while I can go faster in most cases in the Saab, the GTI was a lot more agile--and *felt* faster, which is part of the fun anyway.
I can't see much need for cars much over 3200 pounds, and there's a lot to be said for light cars with powerful motors. A well-sorted 2000-lb car with even 150 hp is a whole lot of fun. Less weight and more power--that's the formula.
