Very common house spider in most of Australia. They are excellent insect killers. They run down their prey rather than build webs. Yes, I have seen some that measure 6+ inches across the legs while living in Queensland. Most folk let them live in their home as a natural insect removal system, kind of like letting geckos live in your home in Hawaii.
The Sydney funnel web spider (about the size and shape of a tarantula) were the one I hated to find running about on the floor as they are very poisonous and aggressive as well. Luckily the funnel web was not very common in Queensland.
