So, I've been thinking about this recently...
I've had numerous cars from various manufacturers and have always been a part of the local and online communities for each. Out of all of the groups (both online and in the real world), you Saab people are my favorite. I think it's a combination of things... You guys are friendly, smart, thoughful, helpful, open-minded, modest and yet confident.
Despite the fact that I've moved away from Saabs, I still enjoy reading the general board here on Saabnet and I enjoy reading the (infrequent) postings on the local DC board as well.
My thoughts on some other car-related groups:
The Acura NSX guys that I know are typically polite enough, but they are not as warm and friendly as you guys. While they all love their cars, many of the guys seem kind of cold - standoffish in person. Many just don't laugh enough! Those that do laugh a lot are the ones that like to make hitting the (strip) clubs a part of the get togethers. That being said, the online folks are a fun, smart, engaging and very helpful group.
The Acura CL (I have an '01 CL Type S - its currently for sale) guys have fundamentally different priorities than I do (they tend to be relatively young and I'm 33) and so there's little common ground, other than they all tend to like the NSX. ;) I haven't attended any in person get togethers.
There's an active car enthusiast message board for the MD/DC area and talk about not having common ground. Many of the folks on the board appear to be functionally illiterate, which in of itself makes reading posts trying at best, but they are, as a group, hateful. They spend much of their time bashing one another. While on some level fascinating, its also a little disheartening to read the uninformed comments that come from some of these guys.
I've started spending time on the Cadillac CTS-V message board (the car that is replacing the CL Type S) and they are an interesting bunch. Most are not traditional Caddie owners. Nevertheless, there are a few that are of the mindset that Americans should only buy American cars (a view point that I don't relate to at all). However, many V owners came from other brands (BMW primarily) and they are pretty cool. They tend to be real focused on making a blazingly fast car even faster. I've not met any of these Caddie guys in person as I don't have the CTS-V yet (2 more weeks). I'm interested to see how they are in person. There are precious few CTS-V's in the world at large so there may never be a local get together.
The only other group that has ever impressed me as much as the Saab folks are the Corvette folks (online anyway). They seem to be a happy bunch. Maybe I'll infiltrate one of the local groups and see how they are.
Anyway, just thought I'd share. Cheers to a great group of folks. :)
