People speed more? In the areas around Boston (say Rt. 9 in Newton, Rt. 16 in Medford/Arlington/Cambridge, Soldiers Field, Comm Ave from Brighton to Kenmore-ish), people seem to speed a lot more (and drive more erratically!!!) than in more rural areas. Its not uncommon to be driving on Boylston in Newton doing 50 (Limit is 35-40) and to get passed by lots o' cars. Police really seem to do nothing about it, even though the areas are more congested, and many locals don't seem to care much either.

That said, up in more suburban areas like the North Shore/Merrimack Valley/Southern NH, the people that do speed are much easier to target, and speeding problems really *should* be a non-issue. But its not and people are hurt and killed every year.

I think a lot of the problem lies with the police department policies and reputation. People know not to speed in Methuen (where home is) and Andover, but feel free to speed around the neighborhoods of Lawrence and Haverhill and even Salem, NH to some extent.

If the Po Po of various communities could coordinate somehow to do like a week of major stings (like someone else mentioned) every few months, people would definitely get the message.

And I agree that more attention should be focused on city and town roads rather than highways. Its a lot safer to go 80-85 (my usual speed) on a highway with little traffic than it is to go 45 on a town road with kids and pedestrians. But it seems like theres always a Statie parked on the side of an empty 93 or 495, but not in places where there should be.

Woah, long rant!
