J,
I've owned BMW motorcycles since 1968. I'm a twin fan and have a 1100RT, a R100S, and a R75/5. The S and the /5 are totally trick-cafed and the RT is stock. I've never owned a K bike, but have traded with friends when we're taking trips. They defintely feel heavier, but the power is smooth, seamless, and seems to go on forever. The twins, although just as capable, is an acquired taste in today's market of inline fours. Don't overlook the RS series BMW twins. The RS is a great compromise between a sport bike and a tourer....not as upright as the RT, somewhat lighter, a one inch shorter wheelbase, same luggage capacity, but not as radical of a driving position as the S models. There is also a corresponding K-bike sport tourer, although it's a somewhat heavier than the twin.
