question. I have found that almost every time I swerve to avoid hitting a small animal it winds up running under my tires. When I do nothing I don't hit it. This is over almost 30 years of driving. If I maintain my speed or just lift off the gas and go straight all is well.
I read someplace not long ago that animals don't understand a large object moving at them, especially at a right angle, at speeds they can't appreciate--as in more than about 25 mph. It probably complicates things when the vehicle slows, speeds up swerves, etc. Too much going on!
I don't know the answer to this, and I have never had deer come out directly in front of me--very close, but not so I had to do anything. But my experience with smaller animals makes me wonder.
In Maine the standard practice for moose is to simply stop fast, because they are so unpredictable. Maybe that's the best approach. Nail the brakes!
What do others think?
