I don't really have any good advice, but when in France, my high school french really sucks and I am shy about speaking. But when dining/drinking with the locals, I become more fluent and they think I am quite funny, yes they are laughing at and with me?, but at least I can get going instead of freezing up thinking about what to say. I must sound quite funny because they laughed at my jokes too :)
I noticed the same thing working in Japan. They all study English at school and are very hestitant to speak and to look awkward. Work all day with them and you have a hard time getting them to talk much, go out drinking with them and they start to turn into chatter boxes and end up singing English Karoke (sp?)
So do not overlook some social events with some drinking involved. It will help you practice whatever you are trying to learn/change.
