I rotated shifts for many years and it isn't so bad provided you get to work several in a row. What I mean by this is that I would work 7 dayshifts, 2 days off, 7 evenings shifts, 2 days off and then 7 midnight shifts with 4 day s off (actually almost 5 if you count all of the hours actually off). Working like this isn't so bad because your body gets used to the midnights and then you have time to catch back up before starting dayshifts.
If, however, they want you to do one and then the other it can get very hard on you. Your body doesn't have time to get used to it before being thrown back to normal time.
I never had trouble with days and afternoon shifts. Graveyards are hard though. What I finally found worked best for me was to totally switch my day around. I would get home before 8 in the morning and would watch tv shower and hit the sack by 10 am, then I would wake up about 6 in the afternoon. I actually put aluminum foil on my bedroom windows and shut the door so it would be dark in there. After the first 2 days, I was fine and able to stay awake. I did this until I was about 35 years old and it worked for me.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
