you need to change your perspective: there is no spoon...er, i mean 'downside'.
i did rotating shifts in the military, also, while in my twenties. it was manageable and Tangueray&Schwepps at 7am were required. day shift - ugh! there is no reason for it other than management & meetings, and who wants to be around THAT? everyone should work second shift (my personal preference) or third shift ONLY (my current permanent schedule). but, boy, do people looked wrecked when they work rotating shifts. i used to think mondays were the worst until i started working in the ER. overnights in the er - i think that's where the term 'living dead'/'walking dead' came from - or maybe why starbucks is everywhere. and anyone with kids should not work off-shift cuz i really don't want to hear about how hubby got in late (again) and you're wondering if your schedule is worth it - it's not! go home to your babies!
it took me approx 1 full year to get the hang of waking at 2200 to get in at 2330. i thought i was IN at 6mo, but i wasn't. i can now, even if i don't get enough sleep (4-6hr), manage to get throught the morning. ditto on the clear roads. you forgot the parking utopia! ditto on shopping, appointments, neighborhood quietness. i take it back - everybody should work days except us select few! and the world is catching on. so many stores, supermarkets, coffee shops, pharmacies, services, et c., are 24/7 now. i used to feel creeped out when (i worked days and went food shopping because i couldn't sleep) i'd enter a supermarket and the only people there were stocking shelves and cleaning floors. now, having the store almost totally to myself is pure bliss - no waiting in line, no screaming meemies, no rude cashiers. never have to rush back from an appointment or use a sick day for a physical or dental appointment. it's great. you'd love it.
and, yeah, off-shift can sometimes be real crapwork, but the comraderie is so there. everyone's too busy to bother with you on days because they're all trying to shine for managment. the word 'circus' immediately comes to mind.
best wishes
