CPO value and term...... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 3 Jan 2006 17:33:49 In Reply to: To CPO or not to CPO ? ? ?, Noel, Mon, 2 Jan 2006 15:21:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You're right about a CPO being only 2 years beyond the factory 4 year warranty. The term of a Saab CPO is always the same, 6 years and 100k from new, so sometimes an aftermarket warranty can be had with more favorable term and mileage lengths, but I question your measure of value as a comparable zero deductible high quality warranty is often more. Or I should say that the $2,000 quoted for adding a CPO to a qualified car is a skosh high, not unfair mind you, but let's just say you should ask for the Certified price first and then watch the dealers face when you ask to delete the CPO coverage and reduce the price $2,000.
There are two issues to be seperated. A Saab still under factory warranty should meet Certified specifications whether the additional Certified warranty is purchased with the vehicle or not. If it doesn't meet Certified specs you're being shortchanged for wear items, cosmetics or scheduled services which you'll pay for anyway, sorta' pay me now or pay me later. Secondly once a car has had the 3 hour CPO inspection the actual cost of the CPO policy is considerably (about $800) less than the $2,000 quoted. So when looking at a car priced at $20k that's CPO, if the CPO is deleted the price becomes $18.8k. For $1,200 you can't touch a 2 year 50k zero deductible high quality extended warranty.
And even the best aftermarket warranty, a General Motors Protection Plan Major Guard for example, is still a third party warranty, whereas the the Saab CPO is an extension of the actual factory warranty which greatly simplifies claims and minimizes hassles. Many posts on these BB's about seemingly legit warranty companies that aren't.
So not only is the Saab CPO a "good deal" you also stand a much better chance of getting a better selected better inspected car sold and serviced by the folks who know the car. Saab dealers can be nincompoops too, they are human after all, but CPO greatly improves your odds. Also CPO's are offered with "cheap money" (2.9, 3.9, 4.9) which ain't all that cheap but could be very helpful.
None of this matters nearly as much to the really car savvy person, especially for car still under factory warranty, although you'll find the more one is Saab and SaabNet savvy, that more often the more enthusiastically the CPO coverage is endorsed.
