Go to http://www.fueleconomy.gov and 'Find and Compare cars'. Go to 2005, Volkswagen, Jetta. Compare the greenhouse gas emissions in tons/year of the diesel (5.2-5.8 tons/year) versus the emissions of the gas engines (7.1-7.9 tons/year).
Even the 1985 Mercedes diesel (an indirect engine with no electronic controls) scores lower (8.9-9.6 tons/year) scores lower than the gas counterparts (11-12.4 tons/year).
Most people think diesels are dirty because the large black clouds trucks leave behind when they accelerate. No doubt a poorly adjusted/maintained diesel is just as dirty as a poorly adjusted gas engine.
BTW - I believe that the use of biodiesel or biodiesel blends significantly reduces the emissions of diesel engines.
