Smaller, lighter cars with more efficient internal combustion engine technologies might be a good short-term solution to many problems, including some that are bigger than environmentalism. (If enough Americans drove VW TDIs and Toyota Prius then we would have fewer foreign wars, for example.) But long term, burning oil is still going to be a big problem for us.
The only solution that is within reach of our current technology is nuclear plants -- lots of them -- with hydrogen cracking stations next door. For the cost of four weeks' worth of war in Iraq we could build a national hydrogen distribution infrastructure. The nuke plants would pay for themselves from oil savings. Assuming of course a sensible regulatory environment.
Oh and for you "China Syndrome" believers, Google "pebble bed."
The solution is clear. The only question is why our political leadership -- in both parties -- refuses to implement it.
Oh, and one more thing: What is the Greatest Country in the World according to environmentalists? France, of course. And what country gets 80% of its electircal power from nuclear? You guessed it: France.
P.S. Speaking of nations admired by environmentalists, Red China is planning to build 2,000 nuke plants. They know they cannot afford to buy or take the oil they neeed for their industrial development.
