Most beautiful road trip you will ever take:
Start in Butte Montana, drive south to Anaconda, then over into the Big Hole valley. Then follow the Lewis and Clark route west, past the Big Hole battlefield (see the US Park Service visitor center there), then over the triple pass and down into the Bitteroot valley. A bit of ex-urban congestion through the cities of the Bitteroot. Visit Missoula if you wish. Dinner at the Lolo Steak House in Lolo. Get an early start the next day and drive west on US 12, up the Lolo Creek, then over into Idaho. For the next several hours you will drive the most beautiful road you have ever seen along the Clearwater River. You will drive it the whole way at 85 mph and will almost never see another car. Eventually you will end up in Lewiston Idaho/Clarkston, Washington. From there you can go to Spokane, Coeur D'Alene, Walla Walla, Portland or Seattle. But first take the highway north from Lewiston toward Pullman. Just north of Lewiston you will climb a long spectacular grade. Do it 65mph on full turbo boost and you will pass everybody else!
Variation: Start in Sun Valley, Idaho instead of Anaconda, Montana, driving north from Sun Valley along the Sawtooth Mountains and Salmon River. This is a magnoificent area, and you have never seen such young, sharp mountains as the Sawtooth. When you reach the head of the Salmon, turn right to visit the Big Hole Battlefiled. Then double back, go down into the Bitteroot, and continue as above.
