We're in Oklahoma, but it doesn't have to be a road trip; we can fly somewhere first (though that means leaving the Saabs behind). We have as long as 16 days, though we usually opt for 7 to 10.
Our favorite place on the planet is Glacier, but we were there last August: flew into Spokane; spent time in Wallace, ID (biked the Route of the Hiawatha); into Glacier via Thompson Falls and the St. Regis cutoff; back to Spokane on US 2 through northern Idaho.
Two years ago, we did a big loop of Washington: Portland, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Ranier, Olympic, Seattle, North Cascades, Stehekin, Portland.
We just got home from Taos; last May we spent a week near Ouray, CO, hiking and exploring. We've cruised the inside passage twice (once with our adult kids, once with my octagenarian parents and their friends; the parents were more fun), been to Paris and England (drove all over western England and Wales in a cool little Renault which was almost as much fun to drive as a Saab). Annie visits her sister in Manhattan a time or two each year, though I usually stay home (not a big fan of NYC).
We're both college profs, so we have lots of time windows. It's cheap to live here (for example, eight years ago, we paid the (locally) ridiculous price of $180,000 for a 4000 square foot remodeled 1930s three level on one of the nicest streets in town, a four block commute to work). Small town Oklahoma has its limitations, so we have our escapes. Travel, and Saabs, are our only vices.
Like the ideas so far; keep them coming. Thanks.
