The west has awesome scenery, but if you haven't hit New England you might enjoy it.
Maine coast, especially Down East from Bar Harbor. Even head over to Nova Scotia.
Western Maine (lakes and mountains)
Northern NH and VT (hills, mountains, lakes farms, not a lot of people)
Cross over Lake Champlain into NY and go to the Adirondacks
Cross into Canada and hit Montreal or Quebec City (a little bit like going to France as Quebec Province is French-speaking.)
If you are crowd/traffic tolerant, try Cape Cod, maybe Martha's Vinyard or Nantucket, Block Island.
Huge range of options in a compact region of the country with fairly short driving distances. But in northern New England people talk about distance in time, not miles, as there aren't always direct routes. As the saying goes, "You can't get there from here."
If heading north, fly into Manchester NH or if heading south go thru Boston or Providince.
Have fun.
