No, it's not really worth it if you don't know a lot about each component going into the machine and feel that you want a very specific brand or type of each component, being mother board, processor or other stuff.

I have built the three computers I own from buying parts at computer swapmeets and put them together with the help of computer savvy friends but nowadays, the price have come down on complete units to such levels together with what they contain inside as far as speed and storage that it doesn't make sense to fiddle with it myself if I should get another system.

I have also had my share of problems with hard drive crashes and memory failure so it doesn't seem like building it myself gave me an edge as far as reliability.

Even a hard core gamers can buy potent complete machines, but then we are talking big bucks.

I would probably go the Dell route (or another brand) next time but clean out the machine and do a fresh install to get rid of all the extra crap even though it cancels the warranty.
