10 years ago or so, you could stand to save a substantial amount of money by building your own PC. I used to build them for friends and family members. In the past 5 years or so, the difference has become less than negligable- you can't build a working machine for the price of a cheap PC.
If you have the knowledge, you can save a bunch of cash by getting a broken PC and fixing it, or have the smug satisfaction of knowing the quality of every part inside.
My advice to you would be to buy a pre-built PC, and then wipe the hard drive clean and load your operating system and software. Then you will have the least expensive hardware, and won't have to deal with all of the bundled software that comes with new PCs.
