As I noted in a post further up this thread, a lot of this is about changing consumer behavior, and that takes roughly half of forever. It can be done, but it needs to be supported by both public and private sectors. Unfortunately, while there are socially responsible companies, there does not seem to be a socially responsible government to provide some of the needed regulation.
There is a need for people to realize that because there are so many of us, the ways we live have a direct and long-term impact on our future and the lives of our kids and their kids. I believe we have to change the way we live--as a society--in the U.S in particular. Part of it is the kind of cars we drive. Some of it is how we work, how much we travel (for work and play), how much we consume--and how we get what we consume. Geez, one thing leads right into another, which is why this is so hard. What are you willing to give up?
In our house we've always driven 4 cylinder cars that get decent mileage (except for the soon to be departed Exploder). We drive them into the ground, so we consume fewer vehicles. We don't commute or buy a lot of stuff. But we are in the minority.
The problem is that the relative prosperity we all enjoy in the U.S. tends to breed a "some is good, more is better" attitude that ultimately affects how we are able live in the future. More globally, though, this same attitude will expand to China, India and the rest of Asia where prosperity (and consumerism) will be a new thing over the next 20 years or so. And with almost 3 billion people, that gets scary on a planet with limited resources.
