So I've been posting on the bulletin board for http://www.standardshift.com and we have been talking about which driving technique uses less fuel, coasting to a stop, or downshifting through the gears (with rev matching).
- One argument is that downshifting uses less fuel, because no fuel is needed to keep the engine spinning, the vehicle inertia does that.
- The other argument is that coasting uses less fuel, because the momentum of the vehicle more than makes up for the fuel used to maintain idle. Also, you don't have to add throttle to rev match if you don't downshift.
I know coasting is not a good idea from a vehicle control standpoint, but we were focusing on what gets you better fuel economy. I'm sure it depends on vehicle and powertrain, but I also think it might depend on speed from which you want to stop and/or distance to your stopping point.
The right way to do this would be to do powertrain simulation, but none of us work for Saab. I might try experimenting with my car as well.
Anybody have any thoughts or knowledge about this?
