True, but what about the fuel used when rev matching? I think that has to be significant, unless the driver is perfect and doesn't over-rev at all.
I think what I should do is downshift as I'm slowing down from say 40 mph or below, or if it's within a short distance, or if I plan to accelerate before stopping.
Above 40 mph, and with a long distance until I want to stop, I think the momentum would save fuel if I coast in 5th, and once I coast down to 40 mph, then shift out to stay in neutral. And yes, I would keep the stick in the neutral position, not keep the clutch pressed in. This is probably the thing to do if I'm getting off the highway and know I'll encounter a red light.
What do you think of that plan?
